Retracing
Watermark
Upon her return from a residency in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Sasi brings us an exhibition of exceptional poignancy. Australia and Thailand are both impacted by water. It is a commodity so precious for life with a paradoxical capacity to devastate humankind by either its scarcity or by its abundance. In recent years, both Chiang Mai and North Queensland have been subjected to heavy flooding, loss of lives, loss of property and devastation due to a deluge of water. These shared experiences reinforce the need for awareness of climate change whilst highlighting the amazing resilience shown by people to surmount difficulties under the impact of water.Sasi's residency was made possible through the support of Chiang Mai University Fine Arts Faculty, ATI grants funding and Cairns Regional Council Funding.

Skin Poem
Fruit of many colours,
Assortment, by types of skin,
Eye them, select, savour.
The generous sensations in your mouth,
Swallow, hmm, enjoy!
Race, there are many colours,
Difference, otherness,
Why does your eyes differentiate?
To weaponize the colour of skin
Why is it tainted, with fear, suspicion, and greed.
Run the race,
Put an end of the way of seeing.
Where history has dominated your attitude
Of preference and entitlement
Like a child, immature, snatches toys
In a playground of sharing.
It is time to run your race in life.
Care not of the opponents.
Focus on your effort, your own path.
With pride and commitment.
Innovate, create, and celebrate difference.
With fine values, new paths, new answers.
For that human affliction
Tear out that complex.
Run that race not confined by skin.
Peel back the layers like onion
To uncover a heart
Filled with generosity and kindness.
Rejoice, love and care,
To define your skin in your own race.
